मैं तुमसे नहीं, खुद से नाराज़ था

I wasn’t mad at you — I was mad at myself.

Note- This poem below is in Hindi, but I have also added the English version at the end. The English version isn’t much poetic because I just have translated word to word, but it would reflect the meaning well, I hope.

Poem’s Description—

This is not really a poem.
I am not good at writing poetries.
But this is a description of how sometimes we get irritated at the smallest things —not because we are frustrated because of them,
but because we are trying to figure out something inside ourselves.

One day, a mom asked the kid to take out clothes from outside when it started raining.
The clothes were taken out… but anger came with it.
This is just an apology —
to both the sky, and the mother.

नहीं, मैं तुमसे ग़ुस्सा नहीं था,
मैं शायद बस खुद से नाराज़ था,
जो तुम पर चीख़ सा उठा।

ग़म कपड़ों के भीगने का नहीं,
पर शायद सही से न सोने का था,
ग़ुस्सा मुझे तुम पर नहीं,
अपनी खुद की लाचारी और नाकामयाबी पर था।

मुझे तो तुम्हारे साथ रहने का मन था,
पर आधी खुली आँखें और भागते हुए दिल को तो,
लाइट बंद कर सोने की एक और नाकाम कोशिश करना ही मंज़ूर था।

तुम्हें पता है मैंने एक ख़तों की किताब लिखी थी,
आज मन किया कि उसे भी जलाकर राख कर दूँ,
एक समय बहुत प्रिय थी वो मुझे,
लेकिन अब वह भी व्यर्थ-सी प्रतीत हो रही थी।

वह प्रिय थी मुझे उस स्वप्न की तरह,
जिसने न कभी खुद की पूर्णता देखी, न ही हुआ समाप्त,
बुझी हुई उस ज्वाला की भाँति,
जिसमें अभी भी था थोड़ा-सा ताप।

उन स्वप्नों ने मुझसे मेरा एक हिस्सा-सा छीन लिया,
और अपनी परछाईं की छवि के भूत को मेरे दिल में घर दे दिया।

अपूर्ण चीज़ें अगर उम्मीदों के घोड़ों पर सवार हो,
तो हमारे पंखों से उगा देती हैं,
पर जब उम्मीद ने भी साथ छोड़ दिया हो,
तो वह चीज़ें भी काँटों सा रूप धर लेती हैं।

उन मनमोहक गुलाब के काँटों की भाँति,
जिनसे चाहकर भी अलग होने का अर्थ,
अपने इतने वर्षों के स्वप्न वाले स्वयं की थी समाप्ति।

कभी-कभी लगता है कि स्वप्न वास्तव में मिथ्या ही थे,
तो इन्हें इतने वक़्त तक चाहने का पुरुषार्थ था ही क्यों?
जब मिथ्या को ही सत्य मानने लगे,
तब असल सत्य और मेरे अवगुण प्रत्यक्ष हुए ही क्यों?

बस इन्हीं सवालों में उलझा हुआ था मैं,
कि तुम अपने अनमोल रूप में प्रस्तुत हो गए,
मुझे सवालों के जवाब और एक मीठी नींद की तलाश थी,
कि उसी क्षण तुम अपना अतुल्य सौंदर्य लिए बरस पड़े।

माफ़ कर दोगे क्या तुम मुझे,
जो मैं तुम पर चीख़ पड़ा?

मैं सफ़ाई नहीं देना चाहता,
मुझे अपनी गलती का एहसास है।

तुमसे ही मेरी दुनिया है,
तुमसे ही जीने की आस है।

मैं स्वार्थी हूँ, यह मुझे ज्ञात है,
पर तुम तो सागर से भी गहरे हो,
और मुझे तुम्हारा ही तो बस एक साथ है।

माफ़ कर दो ना मुझे फिर एक बार,
अबकी बार जब बरसोगे तुम,
तो मैं रहूँगा तुम्हारे ही साथ।

ना कपड़े निकालने पर चिड़ूँगा,
ना गेट बंद करके लुकूँगा,
बस तुम्हारी गोद में आके,
बिलकुल बालक की भाँति सुकून से बैठा रहूँगा।

मेरे प्रिय आकाश, और मेरी प्रिय माँ,
तुम हो तो, हम हैं,
वरना तो घर में होते हुए भी हम बेघर हैं।

English Translation—

No, I was not angry at you,
I was probably mad at myself,
That I yelled at you.

The frustration wasn’t because the clothes got drenched,
But probably because I couldn’t sleep well.
The anger wasn’t meant for you,
It was at my own helplessness and failures.

I wanted to stay with you,
But my half-opened eyes and my racing heart,
Accepted to switch off the lights and a failed try to sleep.

You know, I wrote a book of letters?
I wanted to burn it to ashes today.
It was very close to me once,
But now, it also seemed a waste.

It was close to me like those dreams,
That never got to see them fulfilled and never even ended,
Like that extinguished fire,
That still has some warmth left.

Those dreams kind of snatched a piece of mine,
And housed the ghosts of images of their shadows in my heart.

Unfulfilled things, if ridden on the horse of hopes,
Give us kind of wings to fly,
But when even hope had left,
Even those things take the form of thorns.

Like those thorns of mesmerizing roses,
Whom even to leave willingly meant,
The end of the version that carried those dreams for years.

Sometimes I feel like if dreams were all a myth,
Then why did I have the courage to carry them for this long?
When I started considering myths as truths,
Then why did the real truth and my faults come up to the front?

I was just wondering about these questions,
When you showed up in your invaluable form.
I was searching for answers and a sweet sleep,
When you rained with your incomparable beauty.

Will you forgive me,
For I yelled at you?

I don’t want to make excuses,
I have realised my fault.

You are my whole world,
You give me the will to live.
I am selfish, I know,
But you're even deeper than the ocean,
And I only have you as my company.

Please forgive me once more,
This time when you'll rain,
I will only be with you.

I won’t sulk at taking out clothes,
I won’t even hide by locking the door,
I will just come to your lap,
And would sit there like a small kid of yours.

My dear sky, and my dear Mom,
If you're here, then only I'm here,
Otherwise, I am just homeless while being at home.
